China Roundup: Regulator sets up website to report gaming firms, and other news

Regulator sets up a website to report infringement in gaming business

  • In China, people can report any company that hasn’t implemented limits on the time teenagers spend on games and how much money they shell out on them, as well as those that don’t require kids to disclose their real names upon registration.
  • The development comes amid the government’s so-called effort to prevent gaming addiction among minors.
  • The Chinese Communist Party’s propaganda department and other regulators summoned big gaming firms, such as Tencent and NetEase, to discuss implementing the new gaming restrictions.

Tencent’s messaging app stops blocking links to its competitors

  • Users of QQ, Tencent’s messaging app, can now open links to Alibaba’s ecommerce firm Taobao and ByteDance’s short-video app Douyin.
  • Earlier, some internet platforms including Tencent and Alibaba were allegedly blocking links to their rival websites.
  • Chinese regulators have told all companies to stop the long-standing practices but haven’t specified the consequences for those that fail to follow the order.
