Carousell adds former Lazada exec to team as new CTO

Singapore-based online marketplace Carousell has appointed former Lazada exec Igor Volynskiy as its chief technology officer.

Volynskiy is replacing Carousell CTO and co-founder Lucas Ngoo, who will be continuing to serve the firm’s “business and technology needs,” according to a statement.

“We’re looking forward to leveraging [Igor’s] leadership experience within the rapidly evolving ecommerce space and extensive understanding of technology infrastructure to build a world-class product and engineering team to accelerate our growth and monetization efforts,” said Ngoo.

Volynskiy will be responsible for developing Carousell’s technology capabilities, including engineering, data science and analytics, and product and design, according to a statement.

The new Carousell exec previously served as technology executive vice president at Lazada. He was also vice president of operations and marketplace technology during his time with RedMart, where he helped build a delivery capacity and routing management system for the company.

Volynskiy joins a string of high-profile hires for Carousell, which kicked off with the appointment of Su Lin Tan as vice president of operations in January this year. She was the deputy chief marketing officer and senior vice president of sales strategy and operations for Singapore Press Holdings prior to her appointment at Carousell.

Colin Bryar, who was technical advisor to Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, also joined the company as an advisor.

In May 2019, Carousell named former PropertyGuru executive Lewis Ng as chief commercial officer to lead its overall commercial strategy. It was followed by the appointment of former eBay and Rakuten exec JJ Eastwood as managing director for advertising.

The company posted US$7 million in revenue for the financial year of 2018, a fourfold increase from 2017. Its losses were at US$24.96 million for the year, down 16.2% from the year before.
