League of Legends has been the top game in Korean net cafes for two full years

Remember four weeks ago, when we reported that League of Legends had held the top spot on Korea’s internet cafe charts for 100 straight weeks? Well, according to Gametrics (via 17173), not much has changed since then. League is still the top game in Korea, and it has now held that position for 104 weeks straight: a full two years.

Its numbers have dropped a little, though—the game was above 36% of players four weeks ago and now it’s at just above 34%. The reason for the League of Legends drop is likely the World Cup, which appears to have boosted interest in FIFA Online 3, a game that has gone fro 17% of net cafe players to nearly 22% of them since we checked in with it last month.

But two years may just be the beginning. League‘s numbers have slipped slightly over the past month, but interest in the game is likely to shoot up again this fall, when Korea will play host to the Season 4 World Championships. Moreover, although it’s far too early to call a winner, most analysts would agree that the strongest-looking teams right now are Korean, meaning that a Korean team might well be bringing home first place in front of a hometown crowd. If that doesn’t boost player numbers further, I’m not sure what would!
