ByteDance to spend $30b on China AI in 2026
TikTok owner ByteDance plans to spend more than 200 billion yuan (US$30 billion) on AI infrastructure in China in 2026, according to sources.
The budget is at least 25% higher than a 160 billion yuan (US$23.5 billion) plan discussed in late 2025, and one source said the increase also reflects rising memory chip costs.
A bigger share will go to Chinese AI chips as local tech firms try to cut geopolitical risk and follow Beijing’s push for domestic semiconductors, while Nvidia’s H200 still lacks Chinese import approval despite US export clearance.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Domestic chips bring slower AI work
- ByteDance is turning to Chinese chips such as Huawei’s Ascend 910B. They trail Nvidia’s best AI chips sold outside China and are close to Nvidia’s A100 from 2020 1.
- The change also requires software rewrites. Developers must move AI models off Nvidia’s CUDA platform to newer local tools such as Huawei’s MindSpore AI framework, which can slow projects 2.
ByteDance’s 2026 AI budget may lift China’s chip sector
- The roughly US$30 billion investment, or more than 200 billion yuan (US$29.4 billion), could give Chinese chipmakers such as Huawei steady demand. That would help fund research, development, and factory growth over time 1.
- The plan fits Beijing’s AI goals. China wants to lead the world in AI by 2030, and it wants AI to become a US$100 billion industry by 2030 2. The state is also backing chipmakers through programs such as the National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, known as the “Big Fund.” Its latest round reached US$47 billion 2.
- Building domestic AI infrastructure at scale could cut reliance on foreign computing power. Experts at the Council on Foreign Relations, a U.S. think tank focused on foreign policy, say wider access to advanced chips plus large data centers could help China build an “AI Belt and Road” that competes with U.S. cloud providers worldwide 3.
