We have discussed this multiple times. To build the next “silicon valley”, we need to have different components coming together: lawyers, accountants, risk takers, culture, tech infrastructure, mentors, and investors. Something is missing and that is media or specifically, blogs.
Blogs? Think about it. No one really gives a damn to your start-up except for blogs, for e.g Penn Olson. Try submitting your press release to major news site like Channel News Asia or local papers and you would understand the pain. Blogs make sure the start-up community is updated with what’s going on within the community. With little budget, we interview and feature startups to create a more vibrant and connected start-up world. We also write on Asian tech news and opinions to make sure readers gain a more holistic view.
In Asia, there isn’t a dedicated blog that covers Asian startups. Lets face it, Techcrunch and Mashable wouldn’t bother about Asian startups. They are U.S focused because of the nature of their audience. Penn Olson wants to fill the gap. We want to play our part to help shape Asia’s tech and startup culture. No promises but we are doing our best.
Reality check: How well have we done so far? Not too bad. Traffic and pageviews are shooting up. Most importantly, we are receiving emails and tweets from startups who thanked us profusely for featuring them. Some start-ups even got listed on other blogs. Ideas spread further. Admittedly, we can’t help Asian startups to gain huge users but we help them gain more exposure, at least.
Okay, I hear trolls crying. Trolls think that we are arrogant. We aren’t but troll feedback are welcomed. You are part of the community.
Last but not least, I would like to thank every reader and start-up founder who give us a damn (cliche but sincere truth). Like you, we are also a small start-up. You scratch our back and we will scratch yours. Thank you.
