Services have reportedly been restored for Blackbery smartphone users in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa after users reported problems yesterday with email, instant messaging, and internet access. Users in India were affected by the outage as well, reportedly as many as three to four million.
RIM has not stated what has caused the problem, nor is there any press release that we can find regarding the issue in its main website’s newsroom. The company did however discuss the problem via one of its Twitter account, @BlackBerryHelp.

This outage doesn’t help the Blackberry brand very much on the global stage of course, but it’s important to note that at least in India, the company is doing pretty well. IDC recently reported that for the quarter ended June 30, RIM held 15 percent of the nation’s smartphone market. That puts them in third spot behind Nokia (45.8 percent) and Samsung (21 percent).
Where’s Apple you say? Currently the Cupertino company holds only 2.6 percent market share, but expect that to improve with increased smartphone adoption, which is expected to grow a staggering 70 percent every year until 2015.
And of course, if you’re a regular reader of this blog, you know that Blackberry has been the handset of choice for most in Indonesia. But even there the company has seen recent pressure from the local government to create service centers in the country and to work on content filtering in accordance with Indonesian law.
