McWhirter brings with him more than 20 years of experience in financial services and regulation, nine of which were spent with the Financial Conduct Authority, a business regulator in the UK, as a strategy and engagement manager for its data, tech, and innovation division.
With Binance, he will oversee a regulatory policy team to work on requirements in different markets. The hire comes after the exchange faced challenges from different governments, including Singapore and Thailand, amid licensing issues.
“My efforts will support Binance by ensuring that the regulatory global compliance is enhanced in tandem with crypto and blockchain innovation,” said McWhirter.
The development also comes as the crypto major expands to more markets. Binance recently formed a joint venture with Thai power producer Gulf Energy Development to set up a local digital asset exchange business.
