In brief: Singapore ‘Big Four’ law firm acquires e-discovery startup

Rajah & Tann has acquired LegalComet in a major step forward in using technology to deliver legal services. The acquisition positions Rajah & Tann Singapore among the first in Asia to launch a full service e-discovery practice.

LegalComet’s AI-driven solutions allow litigators and arbitrators managing large amounts of evidence to speedily and conveniently sieve and extract specific data from mountains of documents. Previously, lawyers had to manually look for specific data that they require, which may take days or even weeks to find […] With LegalComet, such tasks can be done in a matter of hours.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Michael Lew, founder of Singapore-based LegalComet, is a former Rajah & Tann employee and was recently appointed as chief operating officer of the firm’s tech subsidiary, R&T Technologies.

LegalComet provides e-discovery, data governance, and forensic investigation technologies that lawyers can use to manage evidence and caseloads more efficiently.

US research firm Global Industry Analysts estimates that the worldwide e-discovery market will reach US$11.6 billion in value by 2020, with most growth coming from Asia Pacific.
