For EA games, Online Payment in the Cards Thanks to MOL

MOL, Asia’s leading online payment provider for games and social networks, has announced that it has teamed up with Electronics Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS) to provide prepaid game cards that can be used to buy virtual items in EA titles such as The Sims Social.

The prepaid cards are now being distributed, MOL says, to 600,000 channels across Singapore, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand. They can also be redeemed for items within PlayFish games such as Pet Society, since PlayFish is a part of EA.

A press release from MOL says that the cards should be easy for avid mobile gamers in those countries to find, and should already be available in 7-Eleven stores in Singapore and Malaysia, and at India’s Sify Cybercafes and the Philippine’s Netopia web bars. In addition, banking and telco providers will stock the prepaid cards, such as via Malaysia’s Maybank2u, Singapore’s SingTel GXCredits, Indonesia’s Indosat I-Pay, and Thailand’s One-2-Call.

Mobile payment is a booming sector across Asia, both for the apps themselves – such as with MoVend, which partners with MOL to use MOL Points – and for virtual items. In Indonesia, the startup INDOMOG is aiming to steal away some of this payment sector for itself, selling prepaid cards in convenience stores across the country. When we recently chatted with the founder and owner of INDOMOG, he told us that the system has 350,000 users and is the sole official distributor of Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA) gamecards in Indonesia.
