🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Baidu’s AI chip spin-off aims to surface value
- Baidu plans a separate listing of its AI chip unit Kunlunxin to make its standalone value clearer, rather than leaving it bundled into Baidu’s overall market value 1.
- Reuters earlier reported a funding round that priced Kunlunxin at about 21 billion yuan, around $3 billion 2, while analysts expect a post-IPO range of $16 billion to $23 billion 3.
- Baidu reportedly holds about 59% of Kunlunxin and should keep control after the listing 4.
- A listing could bring in backers focused on AI chips and raise funds while Beijing pushes semiconductor self-sufficiency under U.S. export restrictions 4.
Capital returns sit alongside an AI-driven shift
- Quarterly revenue gains can obscure a 3% drop in Baidu’s full-year 2025 revenue, tied mainly to weakness in its legacy business 5.
- Baidu has started a new $5 billion share repurchase program plus a dividend policy that may include distributions, with a first payment possible by year-end 2026 6.
- Momentum is building in a newer line of business. Q4 revenue from Baidu Core AI-powered business topped RMB 11 billion, equal to 43% of Baidu general business revenue, based on internal unaudited management accounts.
- The mix of buybacks, potential dividends, and rising AI revenue positions Baidu as a profitable company with cash to fund a deeper shift toward AI-led growth.
