The Badminton World Federation (BWF) yesterday announced the launch of BadmintonWorld.tv, a partnership live-stream YouTube channel between BWF and Google, facilitated under the advisory of TotalSportsAsia.
The on-going 2011 Li-Ning Singapore Open will be the first event to be streamed live. The live stream channel will feature 5 matches today and also the finals tomorrow. While the statement states that the YouTube live steam service is available across the world, some YouTubers commented that they are not able to catch it.
Live streaming isn’t something new, though. In India, Cricket games were also live streamed to ensure fans across the world can catch the actions. The strategy has so far proven to be effective with online viewership increased by 82 percent in the first 15 days of the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament, racking up 11 million pageviews and 20 million video views.
With Badminton and Cricket both on YouTube live stream service, we can probably see more sports coming on board. That’s assuming that the partnership continues to generate more video views and essentially revenue through online ads.
