Axie hacker makes moves to transfer $7m in ether

At least 2,000 ether (nearly US$7 million as of writing) stolen in the US$620 million hack of Ronin Network, the Ethereum side chain of Axie Infinity, were transferred to privacy mixer service Tornado Cash – a move that typically prevents cryptocurrency from being tracked and frozen.

An Ethereum address linked to the hack – potentially the largest seen by the crypto industry to date – today moved the 2,000 ether across 20 transactions of 100 ether each.

However, the amount moved is still much smaller than the 173,600 ether – which translated to about US$586 million at the time of the hack – and the stablecoin worth US$25.5 million that was looted.

According to the announcement from Sky Mavis, the company behind Axie Infinity, the hacker used hacked private keys to make fraudulent withdrawals, which happened seven days before the hack was discovered. The company said it’s now focused on making sure “the criminals get brought to justice.” It also pushed the rollout of Axie Infinity‘s Origin update after the hack was announced.
