Product guy at Tech in Asia.
Hi Chris! Thanks for the reply! I agree that Chinese, Americans, Indians, and Indonesians do have local advantage if their product first targets the local market. But no one is forcing any founder to only target their home country first, though. Take Steve from PropertyGuru. He isn't local but he won the local market + part of SEA. The same for Razmig from Viki. Viki is HQ'ed in Singapore but targets a global audience. It all boils down to how much a founder really wants to win and have what it takes to win. Visionary talent can't be taught in school. It has to be made with failures, successes, and a bit of good fortune. :)

Why do foreign founders do better than Singaporeans at exits?
Heh. I think the Tech Stars part is a bit harsh. Tech Star is considered a "Gold" accelerator, according to a "presentation by Professor Yael Hochberg, a faculty member at the MIT Sloan School of Management." - http://techcrunch.com/2014/03/10/these-are-the-15-best-accelerators-in-the-u-s/

“The Silicon Valley dictionary”
IMHO, I think the 3 main differences between the so-called Singaporean founders vs non-Singaporean founders are: 1. Exposure - What have they learned from abroad and in their past experiences? 2. Market size - Local, regional, or global market? Capturing a small % of a big market could still give birth to a unicorn 3. Working with other great talents - How talented is the team? We know the founder can't build a company alone. If point 2 and 3 are checked, it is more likely that talented folks will join. A great team makes a great company.

It's a sad. Gender discrimination is also an issue in the U.S. Read: http://www.businessinsider.sg/kleiner-perkins-john-doerr-very-sorry-for-women-and-minorities-in-tech-2015-7/

Why Tech in Asia is the best place to get your startup covered
Exactly. That's what we hope for! So whenever a writer writes about a startup, she can invite the startup to take questions. There are a lot of other use case, such as inviting a Topic Expert to a particular discussion

Simple. They will be notified whenever there's a question/comment. It's something like an AMA in every post.

It's just business decision - To go for growth or for profitability? Uber raised closed to $6B (source: https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/uber). So even with a high $0.5B burn/year, it gives them a good 12 years runway! That seems fine.
