Ola Electric charges up with IPO

Hello reader,

Iโ€™m a big believer in electric bikes, far more so than electric cars.

Living in Vietnamโ€™s capital Hanoi means Iโ€™ve adopted a โ€œtwo wheels good, four wheels badโ€ mantra, thanks to the many reckless car drivers this city seems to have.

Itโ€™s also far easier to imagine the future of urban mobility being smaller scooters and bikes. Letโ€™s face it โ€“ many major cities in Asia lack the infrastructure to handle the cars already on the road, never mind adding millions more.

Ola Electric went public in its home country of India last Friday, and in the weeks and months running up to the offering, I had seen this IPO described as a test for whether investors have faith in Indiaโ€™s electric vehicle market.

Reading todayโ€™s Big Story by my colleague Samreen tells me that viewing the companyโ€™s IPO as a test for the whole market is a little simplistic. Ola Electric may be the market leader at home, but it has stiff competition to maintain that spot, and work to do to improve its bottom line, no matter how successful the IPO is.
