We had also seen how MTV India used Twitter to push ‘Roadies 8’ into Twitter’s trending topic list. Perhaps, the most exciting news in the India tech sphere was Accel Partners’s $400 million fund to invest in Indian technology start-ups.
More celebrations for the Asia technology community as Chinese Internet giant, Tencent launched a $760 million fund in China. In other words, more than $1 billion was pledged to Asia start-ups last week. The location-based service market in China had a new entrant with Nokia, Tencent and Sina partnered to build a new check-in service on top of Nokia’s Ovi Map.
Locally, Groupon Hong Kong collaborated with China’s Foursquare, Jiepang to offer deals to consumers through mobile phones. Groupon continued to remain active in Asia as the Chicago-based behemoth acquired Malaysia’s Groupmore for an undisclosed fee. Groupon rated the Malaysian group-buying site as the “top site in Malaysia”.
In Indonesia, we saw how Twitter was used as WikiLeaks but it turned out to be more of an entertainment for followers. Last but not least, Facebook Places will be launched this week to users in Singapore and Hong Kong. No exact date was given.
