Apple has reportedly been testing memory chips from China-based ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, for products including iPhones and MacBooks. The move comes as looks to ease a component shortage caused by AI-driven demand.

The report said Apple held early talks with CXMT, China’s largest chipmaker by market value, about supplying components for some devices sold in China.

CXMT lists LPDDR5/5X memory for smartphones and laptops, as well as DDR5 products for laptops, desktops, and servers. That suggests it makes the dynamic random-access memory, or DRAM, used in mobile and personal computer devices.

Apple said it checks suppliers before awarding business or starting production. Its public disclosures do not say component testing leads to a purchasing commitment.

The supply squeeze has widened as AI data center demand has restricted supply of general-purpose memory used in smartphones and personal computers.

CXMT was reportedly considering a second memory-chip plant, while HP and Acer have reportedly started using its chips in devices sold outside the US.
