Apple tests chips from Chinese DRAM maker CXMT

Apple has reportedly begun testing DRAM chips from ChangXin Memory Technologies, a Chinese memory chipmaker, for devices sold in China.

It is also lobbying the US government to allow broader use of CXMT products, as Washington increases scrutiny of Chinese technology.

At least 15 state-owned shareholders reportedly hold 36% of CXMT.

CXMT has also reportedly avoided being added to a US trade blacklist, while one industry analysis described the company as the world’s fourth-largest DRAM producer.

DRAM is used in devices such as smartphones and servers.

The company focuses mainly on conventional DRAM and low-power double data rate memory, or LPDDR.

The move echoes 2022, when Apple froze plans to use chips from Yangtze Memory Technologies Co after criticism in Congress.

It shows how sourcing Chinese memory chips can trigger political backlash in Washington.
