After staying quiet for quite some time, Sogou has been on the warpath this year. In March, the company launched a very cool new product that implements search with Chinese language input, and the company’s search market share has been surging. Amidst talk that a buyout is close at hand (though Sogou denies that’s the case), the company has today launched a new Wikipedia-like encyclopedia service.

The new product, called Sogou Baike, is very similar to competing offerings like Baidu Baike and Hudong Baike, the two biggest Wikipedia-style sites on the Chinese web at present. It doesn’t seem like Sogou’s site offers much that either of those lack — it’s a user-editable encyclopedia site with all the bells and whistles you’d expect — but it does seem to be pretty filled out already. I looked up several famous authors using the service and the entries are quite thorough.
If Sogou is truly on the verge of being sold, it’s worth noting that only one of the company’s three reported suitors doesn’t have a product like this already. Baidu and Qihoo already have their own Baike offerings, but Tencent does not. I doubt this will have much of an effect on whatever deal is in play (if there even is one) but hey, you never know!
