Online food delivery startup Yumist, which launched in October last year, has raised an undisclosed amount of seed funding from Orios Venture Partners.
It was founded by Alok Jain, former CMO at Zomato, along with Abhimanyu Maheshwari. Yumist will use the funds to build its production, technology, and delivery infrastructure.
Yumist allows customers to place orders through an Android app. The company ensures that the meal is delivered within 30 minutes
“The average ordering time on our app is 25 seconds and the average delivery time is 19 minutes so far,” said Jain.
At present, Yumist serves a very limited area through a central kitchen. Yumist makes all of its own food, that makes it very different to Rocket Internet’s Foodpanda, which aggregates delivery from an array of local and chain restaurants. However, they’re still rivals for consumers’ attention and money.
Food meets tech
Over the past few months, Yumist has focused on Cyber City, a business park in Gurgaon, which is where the startup is based. It makes deliveries of its own meals between 12 noon and 3pm on weekdays. The team aims to expand across India’s National Capital Region in the near future.
Investments in India’s food startups have been gaining momentum. “2014 saw a few services start breaking out in this area. I see a lot more money going here in 2015 – especially in food delivery-based businesses,” Sid Talwar, partner with Lightbox VC, wrote in Tech in Asia recently. In the past few months, restaurant finder Zomato has continued its global forays, Foodpanda acquired TastyKhana, and Mumbai startup TinyOwl secured a US$3 million round of funding.
Food delivery startups like Yumist tend to start operations in a single neighborhood before gradual expansion. Bangalore’s SpoonJoy and TapCibo are the latest examples of this growing trend.
The funding amount of INR 6.2 crore (US$1 million) for Yumist mentioned in the Economic Times has not been confirmed by the founders.
The Yumist team is working on the iOS and Windows versions of the app, which are set to be released by the second quarter of this year.
