16% of Apple’s Sales From China, Says CEO Cook

16% of quarterly revenue came from Greater China

In Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) first post-Jobs earnings call, CEO Tim Cook revealed some interesting figures regarding the company’s performance in China. Most notable was the fact that 16 percent of its quarterly revenue (for the quarter ending September 24) came from Greater China, Apple’s second largest market.

That figure is up from 12 percent last fiscal year, and just two percent the year before that. Cook pointed out that it’s Apple’s ‘fastest growing region by far’ with revenue up 270 percent year-over-year. He added:

How far can [China] go? Certainly in my lifetime, I’ve never seen a country with as many people rising into the middle class that aspire to buy products that Apple makes. And so I think it’s an area of enormous opportunity, and it has quickly become #2 on our list of top revenue countries very, very quickly and we’re obviously placing additional investment. On a related note, earlier in the month we pointed out an informative graphic that shows China’s growing appetite for all things Apple, containing even more facts and figures.

Overall, the news was not all good for Apple as earnings were below analysts’ estimates and its shares dropped 7 percent after earnings were released.
