Anthropic eyes $10b-plus credit line ahead of IPO

Anthropic, a US-based AI developer behind the Claude chatbot, is discussing expanding its revolving credit facility to more than US$10 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

Anthropic could still keep the facility at or below that level, the people said. Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs Group, and JP Morgan Chase & Co. are working on the company’s listing, which could come as soon as this fall after a confidential filing.

Anthropic’s existing five-year revolving credit facility lets the company draw, repay, and redraw funds. Anthropic said in May it would use the US$2.5 billion credit line to strengthen its balance sheet and invest in growth.

That debt came after Anthropic was valued at US$61.5 billion in March. Amazon had previously committed US$8 billion in convertible notes.

A revolving credit facility of more than US$10 billion would exceed OpenAI’s US$4 billion facility, which also had an option to increase by another US$2 billion.
