Ant Group names AI-powered healthcare as key growth area

Ant Group has identified AI-powered healthcare as a key area for future growth, CEO Cyril Han Xinyi said.

The company, an Alibaba affiliate that owns Alipay, is expanding into healthcare as China’s population ages and after regulatory changes impacted its consumer credit business.

Healthcare is now one of Ant’s five main business groups, alongside Alipay, digital payments, wealth and insurance, and credit.

Zhang Junjie, a long-time executive in Ant’s healthcare division, will lead the new healthcare unit.

Ant acquired online consultation platform Haodf in early 2025, supporting the launch of an AI assistant for doctors.

Its AQ app, launched in June 2025, offers doctor recommendations, medical report analysis, personalized advice, and connects users to thousands of hospitals, serving 140 million users as of September.

The app uses Ant’s healthcare large model, built on foundation models including DeepSeek’s R1 and V3, Alibaba’s Qwen, and Ant’s BaiLing.

Ant has also worked with public hospitals in Zhejiang to develop Angel, an AI agent that has served over 1,000 medical facilities and handled more than 50 million user interactions.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

NMPA approval status for Ant’s healthcare AI is undisclosed, clouding clinical vs. consumer use

  • AQ reached 140 million users by September 2025, and Angel served over 1,000 medical sites with 50 million interactions. Ant has not said whether either product holds National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) clearance for clinical use.
  • Medical AI in China sits under the NMPA medical device rules, with Class I to III based on risk. No published clinical validation or approval details exist, so use in triage or decision support inside hospitals remains uncertain. Consumer-facing pre-diagnosis advice may be the limit today.
  • Clinical tools with NMPA clearance can plug into billable hospital workflows. Wellness features usually cannot. Ant’s healthcare revenue model and regulatory pathway remain unclear.

Alipay Mini Programs offer healthtech distribution inside Alipay; no evidence of direct integration with AQ

  • Alipay’s Mini Program platform lets third parties build lightweight apps inside the wallet with web tech, which gives access to the Alipay user base without extra downloads.
  • Telemedicine firms, pharmacy chains, diagnostic labs and appointment services can publish Mini Programs to reach users in Alipay.
  • The platform offers Mini Program Studio, an integrated development environment from Ant. It supports independent modules for efficient deployment. Developers must finish merchant onboarding for the Mini Program Platform before launch. The ecosystem ties into payments, city services, plus healthcare.
  • This path speeds distribution for healthtech operators inside Alipay. There is no public sign that AQ runs as an Alipay Mini Program.
