3 startups get funding from Indonesia’s angel investment network

Indonesian angel investment network Angin announced yesterday that is has backed three new startups.

Landmapp received a pre-seed round. It’s a mobile platform that provides affordable maps and surveys for smallholder farmers. The company is currently operating in Indonesia and Ghana. Angin invested alongside a group of other angel investors from across Europe and Asia, said David Soukhasing, who’s the head of the Angin fund.

Summit Medical received a seed round from Angin. The investment was made together with Sovereign’s Capital and Maloekoe Ventures. Summit provides training and education to local healthcare professionals, paying special attention to Indonesia’s nursing sector.

Qontak crawls the web for data of companies and the professionals working there, verifying the info regularly. It’s supposed to help sales people get access to leads and run targeted campaigns. Angin invested together with Indonusa Dwitama.

Some of the deals were closed a few months back, but Angin chose to make a formal announcement about its latest portfolio additions now, to coincide with a relaunch of its website.

Second wind

Angin – which means wind in Indonesian – recently took on a new direction, abandoning the paradigm of investing only in women-led startups.

The angel network also used to be comprised exclusively of female investors, but that rule changed. When Angin opened its second fund last year, it allowed angels of all genders to become part of the club.

Angin now consists of a group of 34 investors and counts nine portfolio companies in total, including the investments made out of the first, women-focused fund. David says two more investments will be announced in the coming weeks.

The focus is predominantly on pre-seed to seed stage startups, with an average ticket size of US$50,000, David explains. “Some of our angels are willing to commit more funding and due to our ability to syndicate angels together, we are able to provide up to US$500,000 for larger rounds.”
