Cainiao, the logistics arm of Alibaba Group, has opened its first warehouse in Greater Jakarta, Indonesia, the company said in a LinkedIn post.

Called Cainiao Cikarang Logistics Park, the location is part of the firm’s warehouse network in Southeast Asia, adding to those it launched in Thailand and Vietnam.

The new warehouse covers an area of 320,000 square meters and is situated in Cikarang, Bekasi Regency.

Before the warehouse was officially launched, 75% of the space had already been booked by businesses. Among the new location’s tenants are Lazada (a portfolio firm of Alibaba), CJ Logistics, Klog, and Haier.

In 2021, Cainiao announced its long-term plan to build smart warehouses across the region, aimed to cover 2.5 million square meters, to support B2B and B2C businesses.

Earlier this year, Reuters reported that Cainiao could raise up to US$2 billion via a public listing in Hong Kong in early 2024. The IPO is part of Alibaba’s recent restructuring efforts, which split its business into six separate units.

After its announcement of the restructuring, Alibaba also injected US$845 million into Lazada. This was on top of the roughly US$6 billion the Chinese tech titan already pumped into the ecommerce firm.
