In brief: Alibaba vows โ€˜no job cuts this yearโ€™

This year, we will not only not cut staff but also develop the Alibaba platform effect, fully promote consumption, and drive more manufacturing and service orders. At a time when the economy isnโ€™t good, the platformโ€™s greatest value is job creation.

Those are the words of Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang as he seeks to reassure staff after a wave of layoffs at Chinese tech firms, including 2,000 employees at Didi and 10 percent of executives at archival JD.

In the full statement posted to its Weibo account, Alibaba vowed to โ€œkeep recruitment openโ€ and โ€œincrease training programs for talent.โ€

The ecommerce giant had 101,550 employees worldwide at the end of 2018, up from 63,809 the year prior.
