Hello reader,

Speed kills. And when it comes to AI, speed is doing serious damage to traditional venture capital models.

You might not think that a portfolio company rapidly reaching a huge valuation would be a problem for its investors, but that’s not quite the case. This was one of the more interesting nuggets I learned from editing today’s Top Story, written by lawyers Pang Lee and Joyce Wang.

As they explain, the swift inflation of valuations is straining the traditional 10-year fund cycle. When a company’s private valuation sprints ahead of its fundamentals, an IPO becomes risky as the value could tumble once exposed to the scrutiny of public markets.

This piece explores the impact of the AI boom on the VC industry. On one hand, there’s value creation; on the other, is value destruction. Turns out, even VCs can get whiplash as they race to back the next AI winner.

This edition also features a deep dive into Hepmil Media Group’s acquisition by Publicis Groupe by my colleague Melissa. Hepmil’s early backers are set to make more than 20x returns.

That’s proof that not every investor story ends in AI-induced vertigo.

To stay flexible and lock in liquidity when it’s available, some VCs are going into the secondary market instead of waiting for a traditional exit.
