Why AI will empower and not replace developers
Open-source tech once changed the nature of software development, and now we stand on the cusp of a new transformation. Generative AI tools – based on open-source technologies – have ushered in a new era of innovation.
Take for example AI pair programming, which suggests code and entire functions in real time. With applications like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot, what it means to be a developer has changed.

Research shows that the GitHub tool has helped developers code up to 55% faster, allowing them to spend their time on more challenging problems rather than wasting it on manual, low-value repetitive tasks.
As the world digitalizes at a breathtaking pace, the World Economic Forum predicts that 70% of the new value created in the global economy over the next decade will be based on digitally enabled platform business models. Developers often walk hand in hand with innovation, and before long, tools like AI pair programming could drive the software that powers the world.
This seismic shift means we’ll have to change how we think about developers. Taking full advantage of AI-powered development requires a progressive approach based on a deep understanding of the value of the practice.
Fundamentally, the requirement for developers to research, plan, and understand preexisting code as they approach a new project will never go away. However, the act of turning thoughts into code will be supported in a major way by AI.
The business adoption of generative AI will increase demand for developers but also alter how organizations empower them. The job description is changing, and that requires a mindset shift from business leaders.
Technical grounding still vital
Regardless of the shifts in the landscape, technical know-how is still the foundation that a developer’s value is built on.
Take a talented Python developer joining a C++ team. It will take time for them to get up to speed, but AI shortens that process because coding languages becomes less of a priority. Provided they understand the architecture, AI can significantly improve time to value.
While a solid base of technical expertise will always be vital, developers no longer need to over-index on coding skills. Instead, those that prioritize soft skills and place more emphasis on strategy and collaboration will become agents of change.
For businesses, it will be vital to recognize the need for technical knowledge but also create an environment where those soft skills are valued and can flourish. This means junior developers will need a new kind of mentoring.
Instead of focusing feedback on processes and technical skills, support should center on the wider building blocks of driving innovation and tackling growth areas beyond technical progress.
