Something exciting and extraordinary happens when something otherwise ordinary is set into slow motion – details are wonderfully amplified and call for us to take a moment to look at the world in a different light. Take a look at how some have used this strategy in their own ads –
Google proved a point by comparing Chrome to the speed of potatoes (yes), lightning and sound – in a really quirky and interesting way. The use of contrast also highlighted the actual speed of which these things were happening, and reinforces that fact that Chrome is a really fast browser.
On a less scientific note, Pedigree uses the same approach and slows down the reactions dogs have to a snack headed in their direction. Shot with a simple set up, it eliminates all other detail to capture the intensity of their stares (ZOMGFOOD??) and together with grand music, glorifies their leaps in an effort to get it into their mouths. Finish off with closeups of satisfied doggy faces, and there you have it – a wonderful dog food commercial.
Last but not least we have a beautiful ad by Schweppes featuring water balloons bursting in slow motion, translating the cool, refreshing and wonderful feeling of “Schweppervesence”. My words don’t do it justice – please watch it for yourself. It’s stunning, to say the least.
