Acronis acquires software firm 5nine to bolster cloud services

Singapore- and Switzerland-based cybersecurity firm Acronis has acquired 5nine Software, a US-headquartered Microsoft cloud services provider, to further build out its service offerings. As part of the deal, 5nine will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Acronis.

The deal’s financial details were not disclosed.

Founded in 2009, 5nine claims to offer the first and only agentless security and management solutions for cloud computing platforms Azure and Hyper-V, Microsoft’s native program for creating and running virtual operating systems. Its software helps companies reduce costs, increase productivity, and mitigate security risks.

Acronis, on the other hand, specializes in backup, protection, disaster recovery, and enterprise file syncing and sharing solutions. It recently banked US$147 million in a round led by investment banking giant Goldman Sachs, pushing the company’s valuation to over US$1 billion.

With the deal, Acronis plans to integrate 5nine’s solution into its own management solution, Acronis Cyber Platform, and offer new services through its cyber protection services portal Acronis Cyber Cloud Solutions.

“By adding 5nine’s solutions to our portfolio of cyber protection products and services, we’re giving our partners and customers an easy way to adopt the Microsoft hybrid cloud platform. With a combined solution, organizations will be able to migrate all or select workloads to the cloud and then manage both on-premises and cloud virtual machines with a single interface,” Serguei Beloussov, Acronis’ founder and CEO, explained.

The combined solutions will allow IT administrators to manage all workloads regardless of location, he added.

Acronis also looks to invest in and develop 5nine’s cloud management, cloud migration, and security platform, according to a statement.

The company said it is actively working on acquiring more companies, including startups, which services can be integrated with the Acronis Cyber Platform.

It has acquired four companies in the past decade, including cloud backup provider BackupAgent, disaster recovery firm nScaled, data transformation and storage company GroupLogic, and software engineering firm Tsoft.
