Singapore-based Meri Rosich of Quality Time Lab wins at Indie Prize USA

Casual Connect USA, and by extension, Indie Prize USA, are affairs dominated by the West. So it’s always nice to see Asia stick her nose in, and snatch an award or two from the majority.

At the recently-concluded Indie Prize USA contest, Meri Rosich from Singapore-based Quality Time Lab emerged from over 100 development teams to be awarded “most prominent female developer”.

Quality Time Lab was set up in Singapore in 2011, when Rosich found herself frustrated with her children’s short attention spans during family video calls. Her product, aimed at bringing content to video calls to entertain, educate, and inspire children, eventually evolved into the Dinner Time playground app.

Rosich said it was “great” that Singapore developers were getting recognized in a US conference, where apps from more than 20 countries were represented. She also added that she supports women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) initiatives, as a way of showing girls that it is possible to choose careers in science and technology, so that the next generation of women won’t be a minority in the tech and games industry.

While we do agree that initiatives to encourage more women to join these male-dominated industries are a good step forward, we also feel they shouldn’t be so heavily-focused on gender. After all, gender doesn’t affect cold, hard code. Perhaps the Indie Prize committee can look to simply use a “most prominent developer” award in the future!
