Uber has signed a memorandum of understanding with India’s Tata Motors to bring 25,000 electric vehicles (EVs) to its ride-sharing platform in the country.
The deal is the largest commitment to EVs in India between an automaker and a ride-sharing platform, Uber claims. Starting this month, Tata Motors will deliver Xpres-T models to Uber’s fleet partners in a phased manner.
The partnership aims to promote the electrification of Uber services in major Indian cities, including Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad. The US-based company has committed to become a fully zero-emission platform by 2040.
To advance this transition, Uber plans to continue working with EV manufacturers, fleets, and infrastructure partners, among others.
India’s EV space is off an electrifying start in 2023. Just in February, local battery-swapping player Gogoro raised US$25 million, while two-wheeler developer Simple Energy secured US$20 million.
