5 startups that hogged headlines today

Indian coupon discounting firm Mydala might just get Baidu to make its first investment in India. Plus there’s Flipkart, with its rethink on the mobile web, on our list of fabulous five. Read on.

Flipkart

Indian ecommerce giant Flipkart has just put its focus back on the mobile website. Users now have Flipkart Lite, which the company calls a “progressive web app” and can be accessed on smartphones.

The company has used the Chrome and Opera browsers to introduce web-based apps.

Mydala

Baidu, China’s biggest internet search company, is in talks for a majority stake in Mydala for US$100 million, the Economic Times reported. It will be Baidu’s first investment in India.

Mydala.com is India’s largest coupon and discount marketing firm.

Chefs Basket

Chefs Basket, a ready-to-cook food startup, has raised US$6 million in series A funding from SAIF partners and India Value Fund Advisor’s partner Haresh Chawla, an angel investor.

The company plans to use the funds to expand its product range and add new distribution channels.

Quikr

Quikr, an Indian online classifieds platform, has acquired mobile real estate agent aggregator Indian Realty Exchange for an undisclosed amount.

The deal will help boost the company’s new marketplace for homes QuikrHomes, it said.

Didi

Mumbai-based on-demand maids service provider Didi has raised US$150,000 in angel funding from international angel investors Jozef Bardik, Leo Wang and Sangeeth Ram.

The company wants to use this round of funding for technology enhancement and marketing to increase its reach across Mumbai.
