Tencent HQ in Shenzhen
Chinese internet service portal Tencent has started construction on a 90,000 square meter data center north of Tianjin, according to DataCenter Dynamics. The report puts the initial investment in the project at $91.76 million.
To give the scale of Tencent’s data center some perspective, it’s almost twice the size of Apple’s mythical 500,000 square foot (metricized: 46450 square meters) data center in North Carolina.
Tencent’s new data center is scheduled to be finished in 2013, and will be used for data storage and backup. It should help drive the company’s ventures into cloud computing too.
Last year the company announced a partnership with Novell last year to jointly develop a cloud computing platform. And in recent weeks there has been speculation out there about a possibile cloud WebQQ operating system too. We’ve reached out to Tencent for comment on that point, but the company did not immediately respond.
