One of Japan’s worst kept secrets, DeNA’s (TYO:2432) plan to purchase the Yokohama Bay Stars baseball club, has today been finalized according to an official announcement from the social gaming giant. DeNA plans to rename the baseball team as ‘Yokohama DeNA BayStars.’
Rumors and reports about the possible purchase have been swirling for a while now. Back in October we were told by DeNA that the company was “in talks with a baseball team but nothing [had] been decided.”
The English translation of this afternoon’s press release says:
[DeNA will] acquire a 66.92 percent stake in Yokohama BayStars Baseball Club, Inc., which operates Yokohama BayStars professional baseball team in Japan’s Central League, for 6.5 billion Japanese yen.
That’s US$83.3 million. It adds that the stock purchase agreement was signed today between the team and its two other major shareholders, TBS Holdings and BS-TBS Inc. We should note, however, that the whole thing is pending approval from the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization (NPB) and owners of other baseball teams.
