Everyone knows China has a lot of internet users, about 485 million to be precise (that’s about equivalent to all the internet users in the US, Russia, India, Brazil, and Canada combined). But did you know that Chinese net users — even users in third tier cities spend more time online than American net users, and first-tier city denizens beat their American counterparts by over ten hours per week?

Chinese users also engage with the internet in a different way than their counterparts. A survey by GroupM showed Chinese users have a higher level of involvement than users from any other country, with more characterizing the internet as the center of their lives.

Chinese users are also more engaged in the internet than netizens from any other country — except Egypt.
And Chinese users time spent on the internet is growing even as the total number of users from China also grows.

So what are all these highly active, highly engaged Chinese netizens doing online? Mostly, using social networking sites like Sina Weibo and Renren.
