In China, the Sina Weibo microblog is a common place for showing-off — and yet, few have aroused as much public attention as a certain Ms. Guo (Weibo user @郭美美baby). Ms Guo, a verified Weibo user as the manager of a commercial branch of Red Cross (which turned out to be a mistake on Sina’s part, see below), was showing off her Massaratti, Lamborghini, Hermes Birkin bag, and other luxury items on the microblog. This has put her right in the middle of a Weibo firestorm!
There are now major criticisms being directed at the Red Cross and, of course, Ms. Guo. How could a girl in her early 20s gain this much of a fortune, owning super-cars and branded luxury goods? Naturally some Weibo users suspect that there might be a case of corruption within the Chinese Red Cross group.
Weibo follow-ups didn’t not stop at what they could see only in Guo’s updates. China’s famous ‘human-flesh’ search engine has indicated that Ms. Guo might have connections with some high-placed, well-to-do individuals. But there isn’t any sign that Ms. Guo is actually connected with Red Cross in China.

Although Sina made an announcement soon after the incident that they made a mistake on Ms. Guo’s verification, it only led to more doubts about the rumored scandal. In the video below, Ms. Guo now explains (in Chinese) she has no relation with the Chinese Red Cross group and is determined to clear her name by engaging with netizens through online videos.
China’s copy of India’s ipaidabribe.com has already been shut down by censors. But in some ways, Weibo could serve as a decent replacement, only faster and more powerful.
