South Korea Wins Internet Speed Race

Akamai just released its quarterly State of the Internet report, and we were curious to look at the internet speed rankings again this quarter. The average speed in South Korea was higher than any non-Korean city could muster, at 13.7 Mbps. Hong Kong and Japan ranked as the second and third regions with 9.4 and 8.3 Mbps respectively. In contrast the world average is 1.9 Mbps.

Sitting atop the regional rankings is Daegu, South Korea, clocking in at a zippy 18.36 Mbps. We’ve plotted the entire top 100 on a color-coded global map so that you can get a quick overview. Aside from the Asian regions we mentioned, some cities in Romania, the Netherlands, Canada, and the US also posted respectable speeds.

• Green = 14 Mbps or higher (All in South Korea!)
• Yellow = 10 to 14 Mbps
• Red = 6 to 10 Mbps
