We wrote about the possibility that Twitter may launch its own news network. It is time to quash the rumor. There will not be any. “Reports about those plans are greatly exaggerated,” Matt Graves of Twitter told Penn Olson. “Twitter itself is already a news network,” he added.
It’s true because we often receive first hand breaking news from eyewitnesses of earthquake and disasters in tweet forms. Even events (like Grammy), political struggles or a simple birthday party gets its own hashtag on Twitter. Twitter didn’t plan to be a news network. The users are the ones who have uncovered Twitter’s potential as a platform to spread news to the mass. That said, last year’s #IranElection quickly came up to my mind. Almost all the breaking news was first released via Twitter.
After all, Twitter is always asking us ‘What’s happening?’ Perhaps news could be Twitter’s long-term vision.
