China’s older generation often likes to complain that video gaming takes too much time away from students’ schoolwork, but at least one Chinese high schooler may have the opposite problem. Over the past couple of days, word has been spreading on Chinese gaming sites of a high-school student who’s developing a military first person shooter game called Act of Cinder.
Details are slim at the moment, and the “screenshots” of the game that have been shared so far seem to make it pretty clear this game is still in the very early stages. But here’s what we know so far: the game is a military-themed first-person shooter that’s being developed by a Chinese high school student with the screen name “ELioie”. It’s being built using the Unreal Engine 3 with the goal of creating realistic and stimulating military battles, and supposedly, it’s being developed primarily for consoles. There will also be a PC version, though, including a “simple version” for gamers with lower-end PCs.
But before you get too excited, take a look at these screenshots:

Obviously, the game is still in the very early stages. At the risk of sounding overly judgmental, I’m not too hopeful that a single high school student will really be able to finish the kind of game people are currently talking about.
But if noting else, Act of Cinder is a great sign for China’s gaming industry. It’s a sign that China has young people who are interested in the industry, driven enough to dive headfirst into the indie scene, and creative enough to drum up interest in an unfinished game. That definitely bodes well for China’s indie development scene in the future.
