11 popular online shopping sites in the Philippines

Talk about the hottest ecommerce markets in Southeast Asia, and the Philippines comes right at the top of the list. According to a 2014 study by Ken Research, the Philippines’ ecommerce market can expect a stupendous compound annual growth rate of 101.4 percent from 2013 until 2018, thanks to rising internet and social media adoption.

So we’ve put together a list of popular online shopping sites and marketplaces in the country. Some of them are early players who remain strong, while some are new ones which have already caught up.

Lazada

Lazada is a major ecommerce presence not just in the Philippines, but across Southeast Asia. Backed by German startup machine Rocket Internet, the site offers a wide range of items, including fashion apparel, electronics, car accessories, and home appliances. Lazada has agreed to allow retail giant SM Investments, the company of the Philippines’ richest man Henry Sy, to use the store to sell its merchandise.

Lazada also operates in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand, and has raised a whopping US$686 million in total disclosed funding so far.

OLX Philippines

In 2014, the ecommerce scene was rocked when classifieds giants Naspers, Schibsted Media, Telenor, and Singapore Press Holdings put an end to their rivalry and decided to join forces. Four countries were affected by this change: Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Bangladesh. In the Philippines, the deal translated into the merging of brands OLX (formerly Sulit.com.ph) and Ayosdito. The two were the biggest competing classifieds sites in the country. As a result of the merger, Ayosdito’s users were redirected to OLX.

On OLX, users can sell second-hand items – from used cars to gadgets or furniture.
