Politician Tin Pei Ling Faces Facebook Petition Trouble

tin-pei-ling

The Singapore General Election ended. All was good, except for Ms. Tin Pei Ling who isn’t really popular among Singaporeans, or at least Facebook-ers in Singapore.

We spotted at least 5 Facebook pages ranging from 7,000 likes to 40,000 likes wanting her out of the parliament. The reasons vary.

A Facebook page titled “We want George Yeo in parliament and not Tin Pei Ling” has more than 26,000 likes. The reason is pretty obvious:

After this general election, we have truly seen how flawed the GRC system is, firstly unworthy candidates such as Tin Pei Ling were elected into parliament because they had the backing of a Stronger team and now because of a Strong opposition side, our beloved George Yeo was sadly ousted from parliament.

One Facebook page with 31,000 likes, feels that actions should be taken against Tin who broke the electoral law by posting on Facebook on Cooling-off Day. Tin, however, did explain that it was a “honest mistake” by one of her Facebook administrators. Another Facebook page states that Tin lacks the maturity and character to serve the nation with 13,000 people ‘liking’ the page asking Tin to resign from the parliament.

Somehow, the photo with Tin holding a Kate Spade branded box seems to be the favorite display picture for most of the Facebook pages petitioning against her. It would be interesting to see how Tin responds to this whole Facebook petition trouble.

Using social media

Despite defeat, Ms. Nicole Seah’s Facebook page continues to gain in popularity. As she explained in a press conference, social media shouldn’t be looked upon as just a tool. Rather a politician should use social media to listen and engage with the citizens.

“Let us remember that social medial in itself is just a medium. So if you want to use it for the sake of using it, you wouldn’t get much result,” said Seah in a press conference.

“I think what people are looking for in a public figure is really the willingness to serve, the sincerity, most importantly the authenticity and the ability to listen to Singaporeans,” she added.

Geeeez, please don’t insult Sarah Palin. Ms. Tin would take that as a compliment.

Ace says:

To break the electoral law during cool off day and said that it was a mistake by a staff… could not even manage such a SIMPLE task. Mistake or not a law is broken. How could such a incompetent person be an MP?

Dawn says:

Gosh……Tin acting cute and sweet like a immature young girl flaunting branded stuff. No charactor, no substance…glueing to Goh Chok Tong like a leech….apparently desiring to be in the lime light too much and can’t hold the fort alone. PAP keeps ranting about new challenges our country gonna face and needing strong government to weather them through, then how on earth did the Party find such frivolous individual to risk it?

Mr Goh appears to have choosen a Singapore version of “Sarah Palin”. Good luck to Singapore with people of such calibre in the parliament, pray she won’t turn parliament into circus. Mr Goh, heed our voice, its not about keeping face for PAP, please recognise mistake in picking her, Singapore future is at stake with such calibre in the parliament.

electron says:

I am ashamed to be represented by someone who lacks ethics or integrity. PAP was the creator and backbone of our nation. MM Lee and his generation of fighters are the reason we are here today as a successful nation. What is happening to the younger PAP?

Clifford says:

Dear PM, win back the trust of your people & prevent S’pore for being a mockery of neigboring Asean diplomats. I got a win-win suggestion, depend on are you willing/able to demostrate your leadership. Ask election department check if TPL really violate “cooling day” ruling, if yes, she has to be disqualified as MP since flout rules before voting day. Else, how are you able to account to Mrs Chiam & WP Joo Chiat candidates that lost narrowly. They observed the rules you set. Once TPL resigns, call in by-election & let George Yeo stands for it. This is the real hallmark of a leader!

jic says:

Would you please clarify that Tin Pei Lin’s ‘honest mistake’ might not be a good enough excuse as she did not name anyone else except herself as her facebook public page administrator.

macphersonian says:

If a petition is to be made, tackling the tail-end will not solve the issue. They will fall back and say that voters of Marine Parade GRC have decided to accept “the team with TPL in it”. You cannot go back and say, you dont want “towgay” in dish for it was a mass production item. Conversely, you cannot bring George Yeo back for Aljunied has rejected the total dish.

The call for and petiton must be made for abolishing the GRC system.. which is the root of all gerrymeandering evils!

If we had the majority to call for a change in constitution.. it is possible. But, what choices do you have? Can you call for a referendum? protest in the streets? civil disobedience?.. Pray tell me what can you do?

I am stuck her in Macpherson for the next 5 years with her…after having suffered under Matthias Yao. Does any of the wards in Marine Parade (preferably Marine Parade itself) want TPL in exchange for anyone else on their teams? Can we do horse trading? Even SM had reservations about her, then, what about us?

It is akin to a matched-marriage where the groom is compelled to accept the bride and having married are we now to live in separate rooms ????

The wishes and desires of the electorate can be just bull-dozed away by this craft, devious, self serving GRC system?

Spore need a clear thinker and talent guy like George Yeo to be our Foreign Minister. All Fellow Singaporean let us stand up and put up petition to PM. Hope Mr Lee will liston to Singapore voice…..

P.A.P.’s reputation is at stake now. ‘Honest Mistake’ doesn’t hack it. I’m a pretty neutral person but I think everyone is waiting for P.A.P.’s reaction. P.A.P. has always lauded itself as clean & corrupt- free. In view of the situation, if the authorities sweep it under the carpet, there will be accusations of nepotism and corrupt practices. There was no ‘iphone’ post under the comment and by allowing someone else have access to your password is a big No- No especially after declaring that you are the only one who has access. Big mistake by Tin Pei Ling. Her integrity is questionable & I’m sure P.A.P. would not want to be associated with someone like that. Its not about the juvenile comment on facebook, its how she tried to cover up and not face up to it. Just my 2 cents worth.
