“The shipping container brought down the cost of long-distance shipping so significantly that industries were born,” he argues. “It costs about US$10 to move something from Chinatown to your door, but US$2 from China. Last-mile productivity gains are 2x, not 5,000x.”
Creating new local jobs
Critics often assume automation purely removes human workers, but crushing the cost of a service massively increases demand.
Kashani says, “If our robots cut last-mile delivery from US$10 to a dollar, it will create far more jobs than it destroys. These will be better jobs for people who run and maintain the robots.”
Public streets replace the lab for planning
Secret testing can lead engineering teams to build the wrong features and solve the wrong problems. Companies must deploy on real streets early to uncover real risks, because success depends on robots that can handle unpredictable city conditions.
“You are taking a bigger risk by not [testing in public],” Kashani says, “which is building the wrong thing and not solving the problems that you ought to be solving.”

Operating in public instantly exposes robots to human unpredictability, from simple vandalism to outright extortion. Leaders must build financial budgets and clear rules to handle bad actors quickly without destroying the company’s reputation.
