The Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC) gave 4 million IP addresses to Indonesian telco Telkomsel. Telkomsel now manages 5.5 million IP version 4 (IPv4) addresses for its public internet service. APNIC is practically out of IPv4 addresses, keeping some reserved for start-up network operators.
Previously Telkomsel had only 1.5 million IP addresses and had been using 95 percent of the existing block. These additional IP addresses has made Telkomsel suddenly the biggest IPv4 holder in Indonesia, and is now better capable of maximizing its data-based services development. President Director of Telkomsel, Sarwoto Atmosutarno said, “The maximum utilization of these resources can make Telkomsel the mobile broadband business leader beyond the telecommunications era.”
This year Telkomsel has managed to get 100 million customers in Indonesia, and won a local award for Best GSM Operator and Operator of the Year in Indonesia. Expect competition among operators and mobile broadband services in this country will likely become even tighter going forward.
