We heard the rumor that AOL and a group of private-equity firms plan to acquire Yahoo, and there is a solid reason to explain why.

According to ComScore, Yahoo and AOL are the two largest digital ad networks in U.S. Google lies in third position. If the acquisition were to take place, it would put the two companies in a very strong position against Google.

However, Google isn’t resting on its laurels. If Google TV were to be a big hit, it would open up a whole new reach of audience. But that remains to be seen, especially when price and pornography content are some factors to be considered.

All these ad networks usually target users based on cookies but what’s most impressive is Facebook’s ad network. It might not have the largest reach but its accuracy in targeting specific audience is unmatched so far. Given time, Facebook could possibly be the largest and most effective ad network in the next decade.

So, what do you think? Would you place your bet on Google or Facebook?

“Silver Lake Partners and Blackstone Group LP are among the firms that have expressed interest in teaming up with AOL to buy Yahoo or trying to take it private on their own,” the Wall Street Journal reported.

Both AOL and Yahoo are facing an uphill battle to maintain their momentum as online giants and the merger could be beneficial for both.

The marriage between AOL and Yahoo is highly rational. A combined AOL and Yahoo effort would provide a larger scale in online advertising, both in search and prominent blogs like TechCrunch (recently acquired by AOL).

The stock market reacted favorably with this piece of news. Yahoo’s share jumped by 13% on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

When questioned about the deal, both Yahoo and AOL declined to comment.

Take the news with a pinch salt. The merger is still at its preliminary stage and might not materialized given the complexities in structuring a proposal. If it were to happen, I wonder how would Google react. Is this merger even a threat to the search giant? Let us know your thoughts below.

Mashable has overtaken TechCrunch as the largest tech blog. It is no wonder why AOL might be eyeing on Twitterville’s favorite blog. The deal is still a speculation, with no mention of the acquisition amount. Founder, Pete Cashmore has declined to comment on this issue but insider information from AOLers suggests that a deal is indeed ongoing.

From Gawker:

“Mashable’s proven ability to generate great numbers and game Google and Twitter is part of the appeal, then, our AOL insider tells us. The site excels not only at writing Google-friendly content but also at earning a flood of links on social networks, most notably Twitter.”

Is it a good time to sell now? Or should Mashable continue with its dominance? Regardless, Mashable definitely deserves their success today.

Just wondering how AOL would continue and increase Mashable’s success so far if the speculation is true.

There are many ways to update our Twitter profile and today, it just got more convenient as Twitter is now integrated with MySpace, AIM, Bebo, and AOL.com.

According to co-founder Biz Stone, thousands of MySpace users were seen syncing their accounts to Twitter. There isn’t any data from the AOL side yet.

“As a proud partner in AOL Lifestream, Twitter will be smoothly integrated into AIM, Bebo, and AOL.com. Some of your other favorite services like YouTube, Flickr, Digg, and Facebook are also part of the action.”

As always, what Biz chose to reveal was vague and we are again, left to speculate. Would the entire social media world be Twitterized? We know Facebook has applications that enable us to sync with our Twitter account, but would Twitter soon become a permanent part of our Facebook homepage?

No matter what, we must say Twitter has found a great way to build its presence across other social media channels. I am pretty sure we can expect more action from Twitter in time to come!
