Facebook Messenger Targets Indonesia and Southeast Asia With New Telco Deals

Facebook announced yesterday that it will partner with 18 operators in 14 countries to offer free or discounted data access to Facebook Messenger in the coming months. Asian operators participating in this partnership are Indonesia’s Indosat, Smartfren, Axis, and XL Axiata, India’s Airtel and Reliance, Philippines’ SMART, Malaysia’s DiGi, Thailand’s DTAC, Bahrain’s Viva, and Saudi Arabia’s STC.

Facebook is definitely looking to prioritize tapping into the Indonesian market as the company has the biggest number of telco partners there. Will the special pricing be able to propel Facebook Messenger against the other, more innovative chatting apps in Asia? Let’s wait and see.
