X introduces ‘Paid Partnership’ label for ad disclosures

X introduced a “Paid Partnership” label on March 2, 2026, letting creators mark posts as ads to clarify sponsored content and meet disclosure rules.

The label appears below a post when creators toggle a “content disclose” setting and can be added after posting if missed.

Creators previously relied on hashtags like #ad and #paidpartnership because X lacked a built-in disclosure option.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission warned influencers in 2017 to clearly and conspicuously disclose sponsored posts.

X’s head of product, Nikitia Bier, said in a post on X that the feature helps creators be transparent and comply with federal rules.

The company has also offered payouts for viral posts, ad-revenue sharing, and creator subscriptions to attract creators.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Low payouts push X toward brand sponsorships

  • X added a “Paid Partnership” label while pitching creators on payouts for viral posts, ad-revenue sharing, and creator subscriptions.
  • X’s ad revenue sharing pays about $5 to $10 per million impressions 1.
  • YouTube creators earn about $1 to $5 per 1,000 views on average through the YouTube Partner Program 1.
  • That gap leaves many X creators leaning on brand deals, closer to Instagram’s model since it does not pay per view for regular posts 1.
  • The label helps X support sponsorships that brands often run on Instagram or TikTok 2.

The label can turn sponsorship posts into usable ad data

  • The feature shifts disclosures from loose hashtags like #ad into structured data that X can track.
  • That data could support a fuller influencer marketing product with clearer performance measurement plus campaign management tools.
  • Measurement remains a sticking point since 43% of marketers struggle to measure return on influencer marketing 3.
  • Better reporting could help X compete for budgets that brands now steer toward Instagram for creator partnerships 2.
