VinFast, Indian cleantech firm team up for EV battery recycling

Vietnamese EV maker VinFast has partnered with Indian clean-tech firm BatX Energies to manage battery recycling and repurposing in India.

BatX will handle recycling and material recovery, focusing on lithium, cobalt, and nickel for reuse in battery production.

The initiative supports sustainability and reduces environmental impact.

VinFast is building a US$500 million EV manufacturing plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, set for completion in mid-2025.

It plans to produce 150,000 EV annually and export to Middle Eastern and African markets.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Battery recycling emerges as critical for sustainable EV growth

The VinFast-BatX partnership addresses a looming challenge in the EV industry, as projections indicate approximately 1 million EV batteries will reach end-of-life by 2027 1.

This collaboration comes at a crucial time, considering that current recycling rates for lithium-ion batteries remain alarmingly low, less than 5% in the US and EU according to industry data 2.

The focus on recovering critical materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel is particularly significant as global lithium demand alone is expected to quadruple by 2033, placing immense pressure on mining resources and ecosystems 3.

By creating local recycling infrastructure, VinFast is addressing sustainability concerns early in its India entry strategy, potentially giving it a competitive advantage as regulatory frameworks around battery disposal become more stringent globally.

Battery recycling economics are improving as volumes increase, with the total installed capacity of lithium-ion batteries projected to reach 10.5 TWh by 2030, of which 77% will be used in electric vehicles 1.

2️⃣ Strategic timing for VinFast’s entry into India’s developing EV ecosystem

VinFast’s India investment comes as the country’s EV market remains in early development, with electric vehicles representing only about 3% of light-duty vehicle sales in 2024—approximately 125,000 units 4.

The Vietnamese manufacturer faces a fragmented competitive landscape where four legacy automakers control 80% of the market, creating both challenges for market entry and opportunities to establish early differentiation through sustainability initiatives 4.
