US climate tech firm Water Harvesting raises $8m funding

Water Harvesting Inc. (WaHa), a California-based climate technology firm, has secured US$8 million in a series A-1 funding round.

The round was led by Chairman Mike Phillips and board member Christian Thirion, with contributions from investors including Berkeley Catalyst Fund, Anthropocene Institute, Vestafund, and Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd.

The funding eliminates WaHa’s debt and streamlines its capital structure.

It also provides resources to support the company’s commercial objectives and future funding plans.

WaHa is focusing on expanding its sales opportunities in the UAE and GCC regions.

WaHa holds 14 patent families with 18 patents granted globally for its Vaporator® technology. This technology supports off-grid installations and integration with HVAC and agricultural systems.

1️⃣ AWG technology addresses critical water security in water-stressed GCC

WaHa’s focus on the UAE and broader GCC region addresses one of the world’s most severe water scarcity challenges, where renewable freshwater reserves often fall below 100 m³ per capita compared to the global scarcity threshold of 1,000 m³.

The region currently depends heavily on desalination, which produces nearly half of the global desalinated water despite having less than 1% of the world’s population 1.

Traditional desalination, while improving in efficiency from $5.00 to $0.40-0.50 per cubic meter, still creates environmental challenges through brine discharge that threatens marine ecosystems 1.

WaHa’s atmospheric water generation technology offers a complementary approach that doesn’t produce brine waste, potentially addressing a critical gap in the region’s water security strategy.

The successful field trials at Khalifa University demonstrating reliability in the UAE’s harsh desert conditions (extreme heat, low moisture, frequent sandstorms) represent a significant technological achievement in a region where water demand is projected to increase by 36% over the next decade 2.
