🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Workplace mental health has evolved from basic safety to boardroom strategy over centuries

Unmind’s positioning of mental health as a “boardroom conversation” represents the latest evolution in a centuries-long progression of workplace wellness thinking.

The roots trace back to 1810 when Robert Owen first proposed a 10-hour workday for laborers’ well-being, which eventually became the 8-hour standard adopted by Ford Motor Company in 19141.

The shift toward structured mental health support began with Employee Assistance Programs in the 1950s, initially focused on alcoholism, before expanding to comprehensive wellness programs in the mid-1970s when healthcare costs shifted from government to employers1.

Johnson & Johnson’s pioneering “Live for Life” program in 1979 became the prototype for corporate wellness initiatives, demonstrating how companies began treating employee health as a business investment rather than just a cost1.

This historical progression shows why Unmind’s $82 million in total funding and focus on ROI metrics like “$6,565 annual ROI per employee” resonates with modern executives. It builds on decades of companies learning that employee wellness directly impacts business performance.

2️⃣ AI mental health tools face a critical balance between automation and human oversight
