UK invests $340m in clean aviation technology
The UK government has announced a £250 million (US$340 million) investment in green aviation technology.
This funding aims to support zero-emission flying, advanced manufacturing, and reduced aircraft drag through various research projects involving Airbus, Rolls-Royce, smaller firms, and academic institutions.
Key efforts include developing liquid hydrogen and fuel cell testing, as well as lightweight materials.
The investment aims to attract private capital and create jobs in the aerospace industry.
This announcement precedes Britain’s upcoming industrial strategy, which will focus on enhancing the defense and advanced manufacturing industries.
Industry Minister Sarah Jones say the move supports innovation across both large and small aerospace companies.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Rebuilding the UK’s aerospace position after historic setbacks
This £250 million investment represents a strategic pivot for a country that has experienced significant aerospace decline despite its pioneering heritage.
The UK was once an aviation leader, producing the world’s first jet airliner (the de Havilland Comet) and manufacturing over 6,000 civil aircraft between 1945-2003, but strategic missteps led to its marginalization in commercial aviation 1.
A pivotal moment came in 1969 when the UK decided not to join the Airbus consortium, which allowed France and Germany to dominate European commercial aircraft manufacturing 1.
The last major UK-built civil aircraft, the BAe Avro RJ, ended production in 2003, and BAE Systems sold its Airbus stake in 2006, marking the end of Britain’s role as a major commercial aircraft manufacturer 1.
This new funding targets future technologies rather than attempting to directly compete with established manufacturers, leveraging the UK’s remaining aerospace strengths while addressing historical weaknesses.
2️⃣ Addressing critical vulnerabilities in the aerospace supply chain
The investment tackles multiple urgent challenges facing the UK aerospace sector, including financial fragility and a severe skills shortage.
